Kimpton’s Hotel Solamar Pushing Through Renovation

SAN DIEGO—Kimpton’s Hotel Solamar announced today it has completed renovation of its meeting spaces and guestrooms on several floors. Designed by Paletteur, the new rooms and public spaces showcase Spanish contemporary design, reflective of historic and urban San Diego. The property will be fully re-designed by March 2016.

Hotel Solamar partnered with Bay Area’s Paletteur in early 2015 to update and redesign the 11-year-old property and bring its authentic San Diego story to life. With San Diego’s famed Balboa Park and Southern California’s historic Missions used for inspiration, designers Gino Castaño and David Lasker conceptualized a contemporary Spanish style, blending Spanish-influenced architecture with eclectic modern fixtures and touches.

“We knew the hotel wanted to create a sense of discovery and offer an authentic San Diego experience,” said Gino Castaño, co-founder and designer at Paletteur. “With this project, we chose textures and colors that visually stimulate visitors and help form an emotional connection. The rooms are designed to inspire guests and evoke a desire to return and uncover anything they may have missed during their last stay.”

The union of historic and contemporary design is evident throughout all guestrooms and suites—from woven vinyl headboards and ethnic touches in the bed skirts, to curved sofas, modern nightstands, light fixtures, and suspended TV credenzas. Colors throughout the guestrooms and meeting spaces capture the playfulness and sophistication of Southern California, and include fuchsia, a range of purples, gold, and orange, among others.

The designers also chose to enhance standard guestrooms to create a modern mini-suite—most rooms include a sofa for extra seating, with glass and mirrors set to distribute light in a way that creates an open and airy feel. Other subtle San Diego influences include surfboard-inspired bathroom mirrors and tiles.

“It’s exciting to see all the creativity and hard work coming together,” said Shannon Foster, general manager for Hotel Solamar. “Not only do the guestrooms look incredible, but we are so happy with our new meeting spaces and can’t wait for the lobby to be complete so we could share this beautiful property with our guests.”
