Hotel Indigo Newark Downtown Celebrates Grand Opening

The Hotel Indigo Newark Downtown in New Jersey is celebrating its grand opening today. The 108-room hotel is located in the historic National State Bank Building on Broad Street in the city’s central business, retail, and cultural district. The boutique hotel celebrates Newark’s history of innovation and commerce and is helping to further the revitalization efforts of the area.

“The Hotel Indigo brand is uniquely designed to reflect the local culture, character, and history of the neighborhoods where our hotels are located,” said Adam Glickman, brand experience director, lifestyle brands, IHG. “In the 19th century, every block of Newark boomed with innovators across a variety of industries, such as tanneries, breweries, and mass communication. Guests will be inspired by the neighborhood story uncovered within the Hotel Indigo Newark Downtown, which captures the rise of modern industry within a stylish boutique hotel setting.”

The Newark neighborhood story is brought to life within the hotel through art, photography, and architecture incorporated into the hotel’s design. For example, the mosaic tile mural of Edison’s ticker tape writer displayed in the lobby was created by local artists from Glass Roots, a local community organization dedicated to promoting youth development through the arts. Additionally, the historic nature of the building, which dates back to 1912, is preserved through the exposed brick visible in guestrooms and public areas, with the furniture and upholstery embodying a vintage feel.

The Hotel Indigo Newark Downtown features restaurant ALVA and café Workshop, which offers guests and locals the opportunity to enjoy seasonal and locally sourced food from local vendors like the Military Park Farmer’s Market, and a special blend of coffee made exclusively for the hotel by TM Ward Coffee, a brand that has been in Newark for the last 145 years. The restaurant helps preserve the historic nature of the building with unique touches including the conversion of the original bank vault into a pizza oven. The hotel also features Skylab, the only rooftop bar in Downtown Newark, providing guests panoramic views of the New York City skyline and locally inspired cocktails.

“We look forward to introducing guests to the Newark neighborhood that inspired every part of the Hotel Indigo Newark Downtown,” said Rany Baroudi, general manager. “From a nationally renowned performing arts center and the bustling dining scene on Halsey Street to the cherry blossom trees at Branch Brook Park, we are able to connect guests with everything our local neighborhood has to offer.”

Guestrooms feature hard-surface flooring with area rugs and spa-inspired bathrooms. Each room also features an iPad with options to browse the internet, window shade and temperature setting controls, order room service, and make service requests. Guests have access to a 24-hour fitness center and meeting space for up to 45 people in the Edison Room. The Newark hotel features the brand’s new Neighborhood Guide, a touchscreen display that connects guests to each other, the local neighborhood, and to Hotel Indigo locations around the world. Hotel team members, many of whom are locals themselves, will share their favorite hidden gems with guests looking to explore and discover the neighborhood.

The Hotel Indigo Newark Downtown hotel is owned by The Hanini Group and managed by Crestline Hotels & Resorts.
