The House and Senate have come to an agreement on a five-year, $281-billion transportation bill. This would increase spending to aid the country’s old highways and transit systems, reports The New York Times. The bill would also end extensions and threatened shutdowns of transportation programs to allow states to move forward with long-term planning.
The bill increases highway spending by 15 percent and transit spending by 18 percent, making it easier to get to their destinations. Additionally, $10 billion over five years has been allotted to Amtrak, $12 billion to mass transit, and $1 billion to vehicle safety programs.
