PITTSBURGH, Pa.–TRYP by Wyndham, the company’s urban lifestyle brand, is developing a new hotel in a transformed former school building in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood–recently dubbed “America’s Coolest Neighborhood” by Money Magazine. Century Group will oversee the development of the 108-room hotel and Pittsburgh firm Desmone Architects will design the property. TRYP by Wyndham Pittsburgh/Lawrenceville is expected to open in early 2019.

TRYP by Wyndham hotels are infused with local spirit allowing guests to uncover each city’s destination and individual culture. Through the adaptive re-use of a former school building, the new hotel will convey the spirit of Lawrenceville through design, local art, and neighborhood dining.

“Lawrenceville is one of the country’s best-kept secrets: a vivacious district of Pittsburgh dripping with its own take on art, culture, food, and a whole network of breweries,” said Kate Ashton, brand senior vice president, TRYP by Wyndham. “We hand-picked it as the next stop for TRYP as we expand into up-and-coming destinations travelers want to uncover. Thanks to our strong relationship with Century Group, we have no doubt this hotel will deliver the insider’s experience of Lawrenceville for inquisitive travelers.”

With a bustling art and design scene emerging from an industrial past, Lawrenceville is a strategic destination for the TRYP by Wyndham brand, which aims to give guests access to under-the-radar and up-and-coming locations.

TRYP by Wyndham Pittsburgh/Lawrenceville will occupy the building of a former vocational school in the center of Lawrenceville. Building on the creative space and central location, the hotel’s design will celebrate the nearby community incorporating the work of local artists and designers. In addition to more than 2,000 square feet of meeting and event space, the hotel will have a street-level restaurant and rooftop patio dining through collaborations with local chefs.

“As part of the Pittsburgh and Lawrenceville communities, we know how special this city is and wanted the right opportunity to welcome travelers through the eyes of locals, “ said Josh Aderholt, principal at the Century Group, which owns and operates nine hotels across West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, including several Wyndham Hotel Group brands. “As long-time partners with Wyndham, we’ve been looking for the perfect opportunity to launch a lifestyle brand and knew that TRYP by Wyndham–backed by the support of a hospitality giant and our local expertise–would thrive among the distinct culture in Lawrenceville.”

TRYP by Wyndham is home to more than 110 hotels in global destinations including Abu Dhabi, Brisbane, Paris, and Sao Paulo. This will be the fifth U.S. location for the brand, which recently opened locations in College Station, Texas; St. Augustine, Fla.; Xi’An, China; and Dubai, UAE—home to the brand’s largest property at 650 rooms.

Approximately 30 hotels and more than 4,000 rooms are currently in the brand’s pipeline, and Wyndham expects to nearly double the brand’s U.S. portfolio in the coming year with openings planned for Long Island City, N.Y.; El Paso, Texas; Macon, Georgia; and Newark, N.J., in addition to persistent growth in Florida in destinations such as Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Coral Gables, Orlando, Kissimmee, and Bay Harbor.
