Chandler Hotel Group Adds Seven Properties to Portfolio

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.—Chandler Hotel Group (CHG), a Scottsdale-based company, has expanded its reach by adding seven new hotel properties to its portfolio. The new properties are located in S.C., Texas, and N.M., and collectively add nearly 1,200 new rooms to CHG’s cache of properties. “We are eager to introduce these new properties to Chandler Hotel Group’s long-held, unwavering commitment to comprehensive service,” Jared Chandler, CHG founder and CEO, said. “All of these properties will undergo significant upgrades, if they haven’t already, elevating the overall guest experience and creating a renewed staff investment in the property.” The addition of the Wyndham Garden Inn in Amarillo, Texas, comes amidst a $6 million renovation for the 259-room hotel. The Wyndham property was built in the early 1980s and was previously recognized as the Ambassador Hotel. The remainder of the hotel properties joining Chandler Hotel Group have already, or will experience extensive upgrades in the coming months. The group of properties includes a trio of Red Lion hotels in Farmington, Gallup, and Grants, N.M., a Best Western in Roswell, N.M., a Quality Inn and Suites in Albuquerque, N.M., and a Ramada in Columbia, S.C. Westin St. Maarten Completes Solar Installation

Westin St. Maarten Completes Solar Installation

PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten—The Westin Dawn Beach Resort & Spa, St. Maarten has completed a solar installation earlier this year that allows the resort to produce six to eight hours of its own power during peak times. The resort has harnessed the power of the Caribbean sun for more than a year and reached an environmental milestone by generating one Gigawatt of solar power, or one billion watt-hours. The resort also just installed a completely oil-free Smardt Chiller to further conserve energy; the Chiller is used in the air conditioning and refrigeration systems throughout the resort. One GigaWatt of power is enough to provide annual power to 92 American households, and conserves more than 1.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, which equals the emissions from more than 77 thousand gallons of gasoline consumed. It has also spared emissions equivalent to more than 1,600 barrels of oil consumed and enough carbon sequestering of more than 17,000 seedlings grown for 10 years. The resort began taking advantage of the island’s abundance of sunshine in 2007 with the installation of solar panels to heat the water used in the property’s guest rooms. Phase I of the current resort-wide solar project was completed in ...

AH&LA Unveils 2015 Policy Agenda

AH&LA Unveils 2015 Policy Agenda

Without a doubt, 2015 will be a good year for the hotel industry. More united and engaged than ever before, we are poised to build on the success of the past 12 months. In 2014, AH&LA achieved its largest membership in history, ending the year with nearly 20,000 members—representing half of the entire hotel industry. Our high level of engagement led to the completion of key accomplishments, increased visibility, and record involvement. Congress passed Brand USA reauthorization to encourage international travel to the United States, and we successfully blocked some local extreme wage initiatives, including those in San Diego and Rhode Island. Furthermore, in just the first few weeks of 2015, Congress reauthorized the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) and made progress on another priority for our industry, restoring the definition of a full-time workweek under the Affordable Care Act to the traditional 40 hours. While these actions are a sign that we can expect real progress, our work has just begun. AH&LA recently unveiled its 2015 policy agenda, which focuses on key policy areas we believe could greatly affect the hotel industry in the coming year. LABOR POLICY AND THE FRANCHISE MODEL The vast majority of our nation’s hotels ...

Delta Acquisition to Bolster Marriott’s Growth

Delta Acquisition to Bolster Marriott’s Growth

Following the best growth year in the company’s history, Marriott International will expand its global footprint even further once it adds Delta Hotels and Resorts, a full-service brand with 38 properties and 10,000 rooms across Canada, to its portfolio. Marriott announced on Tuesday that it signed a contract to buy the Delta brand, management, and franchise business from Delta Hotels Limited Partnership, a subsidiary of British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (bcIMC), for approximately $135 million. The transaction, which is expected to close in the second quarter, will position Marriott as the largest full-service hotel company in Canada and increases its distribution there to more than 120 hotels and 27,000 rooms, said Marriott executives during a media roundtable at the Americas Lodging Investment Summit in Los Angeles. Marriott has been an operator in Canada since 1982. Although it’s a Canadian transaction, Tony Capuano, Marriott’s EVP and global chief development officer, said the company will consider applications of the brand in other countries. “There will be a level of familiarity for the Canadian traveler, but I think the Marriott brand architecture will be a big stamp of approval for travelers from around the world who aren’t necessarily as familiar with the Delta ...
