Albany, N.Y., lawmakers are preparing to ban Airbnb-style posts for short-term sublets with a bipartisan bill that could get floor votes today or tomorrow. This new legislation would make advertising a sublet or any use other than a permanent residence illegal. The change would make absent Airbnb hosts responsible instead of their landlords. Airbnb has been making waves recently in various cities, including the announcements that it will begin collecting and remitting hotel taxes on behalf of Pennsylvania and Connecticut hosts. On the other side of the country, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a bill last week requiring home-sharing services to remove listings of units that have not been registered with its Office of Short-Term Rentals.
