The Plaza Launches Gatsby Suite

Director Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel “The Great Gatsby” brought in a whopping $50 million at the box office during its recent opening weekend. And fans of the book and the movie are swooning over the stylish 1920s set and costume design created and brought to life by the film’s co-producer and Oscar winner, Catherine Martin.

Martin has recently teamed up with Fairmont Hotels and Resorts to transform a suite at The Plaza in New York City into a remarkable getaway filled with the glitz and glamor of the Jazz Age.

The 700-square-foot suite, located on the hotel’s 18th floor, has been decked out with period-inspired pieces from RH, Restoration Hardware. The suite includes special and bespoke elements such as a front door that mimics the grillwork in the film’s logo, new oak floors, custom-build shelving, and wall coverings from Catherine Martin Home. The furniture and lighting accents were all chosen to bring an Art Deco feel to the space.

“We feel a responsibility to preserve the history of The Plaza for New Yorkers and our guests around the world, and F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Great Gatsby are an important part of that history,” said Cynthia Scherer, director of sales and marketing at The Plaza. “It has been an honor to work closely with Catherine Martin to create this unparalleled suite. Her enthusiasm and commitment to authenticity have been the driving force in realizing The Fitzgerald Suite at The Plaza with the allure and distinctive look of the 1920s.”

The details of the suite were designed to reflect Fitzgerald’s famous character and the inspiring life of the author. The bedspread and towels are custom embroidered with the Jay Gatsby and Daisy-inspired monogram, which are his initials outlined by a daisy flower, seen frequently throughout the film. The walls are decorated with portraits of the 2013 film cast captured by Hollywood photographer Douglas Kirkland, images of Fitzgerald and his wife, and 1920s photos from Vogue and Vanity Fair. The bookshelves are filled with the author’s complete works and books that inspired the filmmakers throughout production.

The Fitzgerald Suite also reflects the indulgence and excess of the era with a nightly rate coming in around $2,800. But thankfully the Gatsby goodness isn’t limited to the closed doors of the 18th-floor abode. Visitors to The Plaza can check out a display in the Fifth Avenue Foyer that showcases the costumes designed by Catherine Martin and worn by the cast of the film – Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Elizabeth Debicki – during the climactic confrontation scene that unfolds at the iconic hotel.
