A new generation of trade group leaders has meant a shifting climate in lobbying, says The Washington Post. Among these advocates is Katherine Lugar, president and chief executive of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA). Since taking the lead in 2013, Lugar has used her skills as a top lobbyist in the retail industry to create a more proactive hospitality industry. In the last 18 months, the hotel industry group has tripled its membership to 23,000, doubled its revenue to $14 million, and tripled its resources in its political action committee, HotelPAC, to $650,000.
Lugar’s strategy, she says, is to be more like a political campaign than traditional lobbying. This entails working harder to move issues in Washington, as well as focusing on local governments to work on issues of labor, wages, and more.
