State Department Leaves Waldorf-Astoria Following Chinese Sale

    After decades of using New York’s Waldorf-Astoria for the U.N. General Assembly, the State Department is moving its U.N. operations to New York Palace Hotel. This will impact the American diplomats and support staff who typically travel to New York City in the fall to stay and conduct meetings in the Waldorf-Astoria. Officials did not provide a reason for the switch. However, according to The Associated Press, officials suggested Hilton Worldwide’s sale of the Waldorf-Astoria to China’s Anbang Insurance Group last year raised security concerns due a fear of Chinese eavesdropping and cyberespionage.

    The White House and the State Department declined to comment on the hotel choice.
