Hotel Okura, the modernist 1962 hotel in Tokyo, has closed its doors. The property, which has hosted a number of public figures in its 53 years, will be given a major makeover to create a highrise hotel, according to The Japan Times. The Okura’s main building will be torn down next month, but an annex building next door will remain open.
The new 550-room, 38-story hotel is set to debut in 2019, one year ahead of Tokyo’s Olympic Games.
