Unemployment Low Despite Market Volatility

    Despite sudden market swings and a weak overseas economy, unemployment applications remained at a low level, suggesting layoffs aren’t widespread, according to the Associated Press. Weekly applications rose 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 272,000, the Labor Department reports, but the number of people collecting benefits has declined 4.9 percent in the past year to 2.25 million.
