Starwood Opens Sheraton in San Jose Costa Rica

STAMFORD, Conn.—Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide and EXT Promociones S.A. announced the opening of Sheraton San Jose, marking the return of the Sheraton brand into Costa Rica. Managed by GHL Hoteles, the 172 room hotel will offer all of the brand’s signature amenities and services, including Sheraton Club Lounge, the all-white Sheraton Sweet Sleeper bed, Link@Sheraton experienced with Microsoft, and Sheraton Fitness programmed by Core Performance. The opening of the Sheraton San Jose is part of Sheraton’s global expansion plan, which seeks to reach a milestone of 500 hotels by 2015. It is also an important step in Starwood’s Latin American growth strategy. Starwood’s Element Brand Debuts in Canada

STAMFORD, Conn.—The opening of Element Vaughan Southwest has introduced the first international hotel within Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Element portfolio. Built green from the ground up, the hotel is an all-suite, 152-room extended stay property in Vaughan, Ontario. “Vaughan is one of the country’s fastest growing cities with a strong emphasis on sustaining the environment, which made it a natural choice for Element’s first foray into Canada,” said Brian McGuinness, senior vice president of specialty select brands for Starwood. “Whether staying for a few days or a few weeks, Element Vaughan Southwest offers business and leisure travelers a unique setting to thrive, conveniently located next to numerous businesses and attractions.” Element is the first major hotel brand to mandate that all properties pursue the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for high-performance buildings. Lightstone Value Plus REITs Buy Four Arkansas Hotels

NEW YORK—Lightstone Value Plus Real Estate Investment Trust (LVPR) and Lightstone Value Plus Real Estate Investment Trust II (LVPR II) announced the acquisition of four Marriott and Starwood hotels in Arkansas for $29.1 million. LVPR acquired the Marriott Fairfield Inn in Jonesboro and the Aloft Hotel in Rogers, a Starwood property, for $18.4 million. They have a combined 213 keys. LVPR II purchased two Marriott TownePlace Suites in Little Rock and Johnson, which have a combined 184 keys, for $10.7 million. “We believe these are four well-located premium branded hotels in diverse markets,” said David Lichtenstein, chairman and CEO of The Lightstone Group. LVPR and LVPR II are non-traded REITs sponsored by The Lightstone Group. “All four properties were built in 2008 and 2009, and will only require minimal property improvements to increase property performance, as they are in excellent condition.” The purchase is part of Lightstone’s aggressive growth strategy in the select service hotel market. Starwood Reopens Prince De Galles in Paris

PARIS—The Luxury Collection Hotels and Resorts, part of Starwood Hotels and Resorts, reopened the doors to the Prince de Galles, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Paris, following a two-year restoration. The restoration, which has brought the hotel back to its original Art Deco look, is part of a larger strategy to invest more than $200 million in some of Starwood’s Luxury Collection hotels throughout Europe. “As Starwood continues to strengthen The Luxury Collection brand portfolio, we have made major investments to restore some of our most iconic European hotels together with our owner partners,” comments Michael Wale, president, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Europe, Africa, and Middle East. “The restoration of Prince de Galles reinforces our commitment to welcoming global explorers to discover or rediscover the City of Light, its hidden treasures and its rich heritage.” Originally designed by architect André Arfvidson, the extensive two-year restoration project was led by French designers, Pierre-Yves Rochon and Bruno Borrione.
