On Cusp of Union Deal, Airbnb Gets Backlash

    As of late, Airbnb has been in discussions with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), one of the largest labor unions, to promote unionized housekeepers. This is the closest the home-sharing service has come to formally partnering with a labor group, after years of battling workers’ rights groups. However, sources are reporting that negotiations have been delayed by internal union dissent over the ethics of the company. Allegedly, some SEIU members are worried about Airbnb worsening housing crises across the country. According to USA Today, if it were to go through, the potential deal would include Airbnb endorsing a $15-per-hour minimum wage. The company would also encourage hosts to use union-backed cleaning services. A SEIU spokesperson said no formal relationship currently exists between the Union and Airbnb. Read more here.
