Nature Meets Neon at the Renovated Shoreline Hotel Waikiki

HONOLULU — Shoreline Hotel Waikiki unveiled its major property renovation, with design by BHDM Design. The 135-room boutique property underwent colorful updates including a 26-foot high white “jungle wall” art piece in the lobby, custom furnishings, and an updated rooftop pool deck with commissioned mural artwork, along with new hotel programming for guests and locals.

Shoreline’s “Nature Meets Neon” theme, concepted by Army of Moon People and designed by BHDM Design, brings to life the landscape and sunsets of Hawaii with a contemporary twist—designs are a bold mix of colors and patterns, blending Hawaiian inspirations, bright color palettes, and modern shapes. Color change lighting adds to this—the new lobby’s custom white styrene Monstera leaf installations transform from cool and refreshing in the day to colorful and electric at night, illuminated in neon.

“We’re excited to introduce a new hospitality experience to Waikiki, bringing elements of modern design and experiential touchpoints to our hotel for visitors and locals,” said Alvida Surpia-Jones, general manager of Shoreline. “After six years in Waikiki, we felt it was time to refresh the Shoreline’s brand and amplify our offerings, amenities, and programming to ensure that we continue to provide our guests an unforgettable experience.”

The reinvented hotel is an engaging experience for visitors from the moment upon arrival—guests are greeted with a colorful ombré signature wall painted by California-based artist DJ Neff before checking in with concierge located beneath a neon “aloha” sign in the open-air lobby. This reimagined area features tropical “jungle walls”, rattan cage light fixtures housing paper bird sculptures of species native to Hawaii, and geometric shaped furnishings mixed with bold colors and natural materials, including custom Acacia wood cocktail tables, a 14-foot long sofa, modern yellow wingback chairs, and blue metal end tables—all inspired by the surrounding beauty and culture of Hawaii.

“Our design aim for Shoreline was to create a colorful and unique experience for the millennial-minded traveler. ‘Nature meets neon’ throughout, blending the natural beauty of Hawaii’s flora and wildlife with all the colors of an ‘eternal sunset’,” said Dan Mazzarini, owner of BHDM Design. “We’ve designed Shoreline to be the backdrop to an already exciting getaway, and for guests and the community to share memories of their visit.”

The hotel boasts playful and laid back local influence throughout, with pops of color, artwork, and original pieces—tropical wallpaper and multi-colored floors with fluorescent kinetic hallways lead to the rooms. Each room is redesigned with custom carpet, bedding, drapery, and furnishings, along with a “you are here” topographic map of the Hawaiian islands hanging over beds. The rooftop pool deck includes neon wall murals painted by DJ Neff and vibrant mood lighting for a colorful poolside experience with sweeping city and Waikiki Beach views.

“The artwork I created for Shoreline was inspired by the idea of growth—represented in the colorful compositions of different plants and their unique forms growing over and through each other on the murals by the pool,” said artist DJ Neff. “I enjoy working with bright colors, so the hotel’s fresh design style gave me the opportunity to experiment with a fun, neon palette—creating a unique perspective on a Hawaii’s beautiful flora.”

Shoreline Hotel Waikiki, managed by Filament Hospitality, will offer a calendar of new hotel programming, including live music, a shave ice cart, pau hana “relax & refresh” hour, local activities, and maker markets featuring local artisans, with the Heavenly Island Lifestyle Restaurant serving a locally-sourced menu daily.
