IHG Announces Holiday Inn Express signing in Manisa, Turkey

IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) announced the signing of the Holiday Inn Express Manisa – West, Turkey. The 102-room property, scheduled to open in early 2014, will operate under a franchise agreement with Procons Turizm and be managed by T&T Consulting who currently manage the Holiday Inn Express Istanbul – Altunizade. Manisa is a key industrial area of Turkey, and the project will target business travellers who frequent the area for its manufacturing plants. It’s practically located for the industrial zone and only 35 minutes from Izmir airport. “Manisa is one of Turkey’s key industrial centres and the project has the unique advantage of being very close to the industrial zone, Izmir highway and newly built tunnel entrance to Izmir, while also being surrounded by olive gardens and beautiful scenery,” said Yalin Yaltirakli, IHG’s development director for Turkey. “IHG currently has 16 hotels in Turkey, half of which are in the Holiday Inn brand family. This is an exciting signing as we continue to strengthen our pipeline and presence in the region.”

Hilton Orlando Breaks Ground On New $2.1 Million Outdoor Venue

ORLANDO, Fla.—Hilton Orlando broke ground this week on a more than 2-acre outdoor event site adjacent to the hotel’s ballroom foyer to be known as The Promenade. By early fall, and with an investment of $2.1 million, Hilton Orlando will have a new 50,000 square foot outdoor event venue to accommodate receptions for up to 3,000 guests. “This new space, which we are calling The Promenade, was specifically designed around the guest’s experience,” said General Manager Doug Gehret. “The Promenade will have four distinct spaces and lawns for large scale events, or more intimate gatherings surrounded by unique gardens, a centerpiece fountain and will be event-ready.” When the hotel opened in September 2009 less than four years ago, the site where Hilton Orlando now sits was 27 acres of dirt. The 1,417 room hotel recently won its third Connie Award, which recognizes it as one of the top Hilton Hotels and Resorts properties in the world.

Meliá Hotels International to Open New Hotel in Saudi Arabia

PALMA DE MALLORCA—Meliá Hotels International recently announced in its quarterly report a continued commitment to grow at a rate of around one hotel every three weeks, both in consolidated markets and particularly in emerging markets. The company announced that it has plans to open the Gran Meliá Riyadh in Saudi Arabia in 2016. The hotel is already under construction. The new Gran Meliá Riyadh will be housed in a glass building in the middle of the Saudi capital. The hotel will initially provide 252 rooms, several restaurants, a spa and wellness center, and a convention center measuring approximately 2,500 square meters. Meliá will take an active role in the final design through a technical assistance agreement reached with the owner, thus allowing the company to ensure compliance with the standards demanded by the luxury Gran Meliá brand. “Saudi Arabia is a fantastic location for the luxury hotel industry, and our Gran Meliá brand will exceed the expectations of discerning, contemporary Arab business and leisure travelers,” said Gabriel Escarrer, founder and chairman. “It is a huge honor for us to sign our first hotel in Saudi Arabia with Al Ajlan Group, a family company with a long and impeccable track record.”

Virgin Hotels is Building a Brand

After Virgin Hotels announced its plans for a New York City location on Monday, CEO Raul Leal sat down with Lodging magazine at the NYU International Hospitality Industry Investment Conference to discuss the buzzworthy project. Virgin has signed a deal with New York-based real estate investment company the Lam Group to manage the new-build hotel, which will be located in the NoMad neighborhood of Manhattan. Virgin Hotels New York will have more than 300 guestrooms, multiple food and beverage outlets, approximately 8,000 square feet of meeting space, and a fitness center with a spa component. Construction on the northwest corner of 29th Street and Broadway is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year, Leal said, after a couple of existing buildings are razed. The hotel is expected to open in 2016. The Lam Group, which has developed more than 22 hotels and currently owns and operates 10 with another seven in the pipeline, is a newcomer to the lifestyle segment. “They’ve done a great job with developing some of the branded hotels,” Leal said, “and they’ve been thinking about getting into the lifestyle side of the business for a long time.” According to Leal, Virgin Hotels is ...

Virgin Hotels has signed a management agreement with The Lam Group to manage a newly constructed hotel to be located on the northwest corner of 29th Street and Broadway.
