Bill Marriott Inducted into Business Travel Hall of Fame
Bill Marriott, executive chairman of Marriott International, was honored earlier this week by being inducted into the Business Travel Hall of Fame.
The second annual award ceremony was held on December 10 at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City. Presented by the BTN Group, the hall of fame recognizes travel executives that influence the industry and shape today's business travel landscape.
Under the leadership of Bill Marriott, Marriott International grew from a restaurant and food service business to a global lodging company with more than 3,700 properties in 74 countries. The company also pursued an aggressive strategy that shifted its focus from hotel ownership to management and franchising. The move reduced the company's debt load and tax liability and provided it with steady revenue even in economic downturns.
Other 2012 inductees into the Business Travel Hall of Fame include John Fentener van Vlissingen of BCD Travel, TRX, Park 'N Fly, Travix, Airtrade, VakantieXperts and Parkmobile International; Herb Kelleher, co-founder of Southwest Airlines; Harold Seligman of Management Alternatives; and Curt Carlson, founder of what eventually became the Carlson Companies, who was inducted posthumously.
