TRYP by Wyndham Plans to Expand in the United States

4/19/2012 | 'Lodgical' Thoughts
The opening of TRYP New York City Times Square South in February marked a key milestone in Wyndham Hotel Group’s plans to introduce the TRYP by Wyndham brand in major cities throughout the Americas. So far, Daniel del Olmo, brand senior vice president for TRYP by Wyndham, says the New York City property is exceeding expectations in terms of bottom line results. “While the property is unique in its kind against the greater New York City competition, the TRYP concept was always developed and value engineered to deliver the highest return on investment for owners and developers,” del Olmo says.

So when can we expect to see more TRYP hotels open in the United States? “We are in discussions with property owners and developers that have existing properties that we are looking to convert to TRYP properties, as well as developers that are building new properties in both primary and secondary cities across the Americas,” del Olmo says.

The brand is discussing additional locations in New York, as well as properties in cities like Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. Del Olmo says cities such as New Orleans and Austin, which have a lot of Gen X and Gen Y traffic because of their close proximity to colleges, are also under consideration.

“What we’re starting to see is that where initially the developers we were speaking with said this is a no-brainer for cosmopolitan cities that have a lot of inbound international traffic, we’re now getting a second wave of developers and owners that are willing to convert their properties, particularly to attract younger audiences in college towns or areas that have a younger audience that is looking for a different experience than your traditional, conventional select-service property,” del Olmo says.

He also is starting to see an interest in airport properties across the United States that would attract a lot of inbound international traffic.

“Hopefully you’ll see more TRYP hotels around the world that will show the same success story that we are seeing in New York,” del Olmo says.
