Portland's Hotel deLuxe Debuts Minibar Pairing Menu

8/30/2012 | The Scene
If you happened to read our July story about hotel minibars, you know that guests are still using them, and hotels are making incremental revenue off the sale of in-room snacks. Although the concept of the minibar might be considered slightly old-fashioned in today's multiple-option, grab-and-go society, hotels are still finding ways to make these amenities attractive to guests.

Keeping up with the foodie craze, Portland's Hotel deLuxe recently launched a special pairing menu that offers suggestions for classic cocktails paired with complimentary munchies. These menu items can be purchased together for a discounted price from the guestroom minibars at the 130-room boutique hotel. When purchasing the items together, guests will save approximately 10 percent than if they purchased the items separately.

Guests will have the opportunity to pair whiskey with black truffle and white cheddar organic popcorn and taste how the “charred oak from the aged barrels accentuates the richness of the black truffle oil." Or, sip a bottle of beer while nibbling on Pacific Northwest-made cheese crackers from Beecher’s and experience how “the nutty sweetness of the cracker will enhance the delicate hops and extend the finish on this classic lager.” A half bottle of Oregon Pinot Noir is suggested as a complement for gourmet beef jerky because “the saltiness and secret spice bring [the wine’s] cherry notes to the forefront.” For those with a sweet tooth, a single serving of sparkling wine is paired with pomegranate-white tea gummy candy for because the “pomegranate flavors complement and enhance the rich citrus fruit of the wine.” Prices for the pairings range from $11 to $25.

We think this is an interesting way to maximize the appeal of minibar refreshments and potentially drive the incremental revenue of a hotel up a notch. With a specialized pairing menu, it seems likely that guests would purchase two items instead of one, potentially increasing profits for hotels.

Do you think this is a creative way to make minibar snacks more attractive?
