Ikea to Get Into the Budget Hotel Business
If you can't get enough of IKEA's cheap, particle-board furniture at home, you might soon be able to experience it while traveling.
According to this article from The Globe and Mail, Inter IKEA, the Swedish company that owns the intellectual property rights to the IKEA stores and products is planning to build budget hotels across Europe. However, the hotels will not use the company name and will likely be run by an established hotel operator.
In the next few weeks, the company plans to reveal the first location of the first hotel, which will be somewhere in Germany, according to a statement by Harald Müller, a senior manager in Inter IKEA’s property division.
Budget hotels continue to make up an important part of the industry, and today's travelers are looking for stylish, boutique-like design for an affordable price. Munich-based Motel One is growing quickly across Europe and Pod Hotels are becoming attractive options for travelers visiting New York.
Although more details about the project have not yet been released, we bet that if anyone can pull together a stylish, budget-friendly hotel concept, it will be IKEA. We just hope we don't have to put together our guestroom bed upon arrival.
