Water Discus Hotel May Give Guests an Underwater View
Booking a room with a view is often high on the priority list for travelers. And while many beach destinations offer ocean views, rarely do they give guests the chance to look out at the ocean floor. However, the development of the Water Discus Hotel may make staying under the sea a possibility in the near future.
The Water Discus Hotel, designed by Deep Ocean Technology, who have partnered with Swiss investment and technology company BIG InvestConsult AG, consists of two discs—one above water and one below—connected by three solid legs and a vertical shaft containing a lift and stairway. The above-water portion of the hotel contains a restaurant, spa, and recreation area, while the submerged portion features 21 hotel rooms, an underwater bar, and a dive center.
"In our opinion, the United Arab Emirates, especially Dubai, is the ideal place for a worldwide roll out of this product," said Gutowski.
The model is primarily being marketed as an extension of existing waterfront properties that want to give their guests the chance to stay underwater for a few nights. Gutkowski explained that he doesn't expect tourists to stay for extended periods of time in the submerged portion of the hotel.
The Water Discus Hotel is taking the ocean ecosystem into account and have committed to not building directly near natural coral reefs. Instead, plans for the hotel include building new coral reefs around the structure. "There also will be all necessary precautions to prevent water pollution in the vicinity of the underwater hotel," said Gutkowski.
Deep Ocean Technology and Big InvestConsult AG hope that the Water Discus Hotels will become educational and scientific facilities for studying and interacting with marine life. Each hotel has the ability to be fitted with a dive center, so beginner and experienced divers can enjoy an interactive and educational experience.
Not only is sea-creature safety important, but guest safety is also being taken into account with the design of the hotel. Along with highly technical and sturdy building materials, Gutowski explains that the underwater disc will have the ability to surface in the event of an emergency. The hotel will also be linked to a monitoring system and will be equipped with necessary rescue materials.
Although further details regarding the construction and development plans for the Water Discus Hotel in Dubai and other locations are being kept under wraps, it looks like this project may actually come to fruition in the not-so-distant future.
