On a Boat: The Yankee Provides Boutique Accommodations on the Hudson

8/23/2012 | The Scene
We've written about a whole lot of historic properties being converted into boutique hotels, but we've never covered the conversion of a 1907 ferry into a small-scale lodging property.

According to this story from the NY Daily News, the Yankee, a historic boat built by Neafie, Levy & Co., began its life as as the Machigonne and carried affluent passengers to the Calendar Islands of Maine for summer getaways. But the boat is most famously known for its role in carrying immigrants to and from Ellis Island.

The boat, which is on the National Registry of Historic Places, is now docked in the Hudson River in Hoboken and has been transformed into a five-bedroom hotel by owners Victoria and Richard MacKenzie-Childs, who previously used the property as a residential home.

Guests who stay on The Yankee are treated to an on-board chicken coop, original artwork and furniture, a dining room, and an Apple computer. The boat also offers pretty spectacular views of the New York City skyline and easy access to the city for tourists.

It is pretty cool to see the latest incarnation of this historic boat, and we're sure guests are clamoring to book a night or two on board. Rooms are available for booking on AirBnB, and you can find more photos of the on-the-water property over on the NY Daily News.
