What is the secret to being a successful hotelier?
It’s easy to say that working hard at something leads to a positive result; however, that isn’t always the case. Some people work extremely hard but don’t find advancement. By managing others and having the benefit of seeing differences across our industry, I’d like to share my perspective.

Owners, managers, and firms I have worked for would tell you I was always hardworking and could put the right priorities first. That’s because, at the end of the day, the name on the desk was mine, and keeping it there meant that I had to perform as I was constantly being evaluated. Whether it is a company, guest, employee, or boss, everyone is always watching you. Never let anyone outwork you. That doesn’t mean hours, that means determination, skill, and lots of common sense.

There are three core components to my approach: Be passionate about something and do it better than anyone; don’t complain; and listen and learn.

If you work with a good attitude and align yourself with the company’s goals, people typically will listen to you. And, even if you don’t agree with the company’s approach, always stay true to yourself, even if that means putting your job on the line.
