International travel continues to be a lucrative market for U.S. destinations and attractions. According to the U.S. Travel Association, approximately 65 million people traveled to the States from international destinations in 2012. On average, international travelers also spend five times more than domestic travelers.
“International travelers provide tremendous opportunity to the US hotelier,” says Adam Anderson, director of industry relations at Expedia. “In addition to being a source for incremental bookings, generally speaking they book farther in advance and stay longer, thus representing a more valuable booking. We in the industry have talked about the opportunities from emerging feeder markets like China and Brazil, but let’s not forget our nothern neighbors. They are responsible for more international travelers than any other nation.”
Research, presented by Expedia, shows that more than 21 million Canadian travelers visited the United States last year and spent a total of $16 billion—and those numbers are expected to grow.
Hitting big cities: The top travel destinations for Canadian travelers are major metropolitan areas including Las Vegas, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Orlando, according to bookings through Expedia Inc. sites.
Spending on lodging: The majority of Canadian travelers (70 percent) skip the budget hotels and book into 3-5 star accommodations. These travelers spend an ADR of $134 per night, and the budget for lodging represents one-third of a traveler’s overall budget.
Preferred transportation methods: Since the U.S. shares a border with Canada, most travelers (58 percent) cross into the States by car, making many U.S. destinations easily accessible via road trips. But plane travel is also a prominent method for inbound Canadian visitors. Air transportation is the second most popular method of transportation and makes up 35 percent, while bus travel equates to two percent of the transportation pie.
Shop ‘til you drop: Surprisingly, the majority of Canadians actually (76 percent) come to the United States in order to shop. Other popular leisure activities include sightseeing (44 percent), visiting friends or relatives (32 percent), and participating in outdoor or leisure activities (28 percent).
