SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts Breaks Fundraising Goal

1/24/2013 | The Scene
In 2000, Silverbirch Hotels & Resort, a hotel management company in Canada, launched its inaugural "Friends in Need" program, which helps raise money for local charities by offering guests special holiday rates and donating $10 from each sale to a hotel's charity of choice. This year, the program exceeded expectations and the company was able to collect 15 percent more than initially anticipated.

The goal set out by Silverbirch as $50,000, a steep milestone to reach. But through guest participation and associate involvement, the fundraising came through and the money will be distributed to the communities of participating Silverbirch properties.

“Friends in Need is an initiative for SilverBirch to give back to its communities, and since its inception we have raised close to $1.15 million for worthy causes across Canada,” said Steve Giblin, president and CEO of SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts. “The campaign is always well received by our guests and in turn, we are able to turn our guests’ support into financial support for great local programs.”

Besides raising money through booking rooms, some hotels launched creative campaigns of their own to get staff members involved. At the Radisson Hotel Edmonton South, Robin Cumine, area general manager, raised an additional $1,500 from staff donations for shaving off his moustache, which he’s had since he was a teenager. The Harbour Towers Hotel & Suites Victoria began a Friday Jeans Day program, where associates contributed $5 to wear their jeans to work, raising an additional $1,000 for their charity.

And of special note is the Lethbridge Lodge Hotel and Conference Center which raised over $7,000 for the STARS Air Ambulance to fund two medi-helicopter flights, exceeding their target goal of funding for one flight.

It's always nice to see hotel companies pitching in and doing what they can to help communities. It's hospitality at its finest.
